For almost a year, a group of writers from Road Test Magazine drove a Subaru 2-Door Sedan as hard as they could — even to the point of forgetting all about “proper and routine servicing.”
But the Subaru came through in fine
style.
At the end of 16,000 miles there were “no breakdowns of any kind...no rattles, squeaks, or groans developed in the body or chassis.”
Fuel economy? “Overall average was 27.4 mpg, with a high of 29.8 and a low of 24.4.”*
Engine performance? “Just as quiet today as it was when the car was brand new.”
Ride? “Firm and comfortable.”
Value? “Feature for feature, standard equipment for standard equipment, it easily comes off on a par with several cars costing

Smooth. Powerful. And extremely well-mannered. To show you what we mean, we’ll take Quad-ro-zontal apart:
The Quad-
As in quadruple. Four cylinders, displacing 1361 cc. All-aluminum alloy construction to trim excess weight, tame heat buildup, and add strength. We machine the cylinder liners from hard high-chrome steel, forge the rods, and make the pistons from the kind of high-strength alloy used in racing engines.
The ro-
From hydro (as in water). Liquid cooling rigorously controls cylinder temperatures and keeps them even for smooth operation and much longer life. But if you look
for an engine-driven cooling fan, you won’t find it. Like an Indy racer, Subaru’s electric fan kicks in only when its needed, running at top speed without you racing the engine. And with all that hot 50/30 permanent anti-freeze, Subaru’s heater runs like a blast furnace.
The -zontal
With Subaru’s pistons lovingly balanced in a flat-four arrangement, each one cancels out its partner’s vibrations. So you’re not plagued with four-cylinder “buzz’’ or “boom” at high speeds.
