DESCRIPTION:
The Subaru SVX. On August 28th, (1991) Ken Knight test drove a new SVX. 9 days and 5,257 miles later, he brought it back
.
Ken and his partner, Bob Dart, decided to enter one of the toughest and most grueling races in the world. The Alcan 5,000 Rally. And they decided to do it in a brand new, borrowed Subaru SVX.™
Ken and Bob didn't modify the car one little bit. No special suspension. No special transmission. No additional safety features. Even though for the nine days they would be driving over mountains, dodging bears, and speeding around the greatest collection of curves ever assembled.
People had warned them to be prepared for the worst and to make sure they carried lots of spare parts. Bob and Ken listened to all they had to say and reluctantly agreed to bring along an extra fuel filter and another set of windshield wipers.
As Ken put it: “Its a Subaru? How much can
go wrong?” (Still, if anything did go
wrong,
they’d
be
stranded
out
in
the
wilds
and
out of the
race.)
The race began in Seattle and continued through Canada and Alaska. All Ken and Bob had to do was maintain an average speed of 51 miles per hour. Which is easy when you're on a paved interstate. But pretty darn difficult when you're crossing 10,000-foot mountain passes and driving over dirt roads with another curve every thirteen feet or so. Still, thanks to
the 230 horsepower engine in the SVX, they stayed right on schedule. (Ken still refuses to say how fast they were traveling. And prefers to simply classify their overall driving style as “aggressive.”)
Aggressively, they traveled over the Northern Rockies. Down the Cascade Mountain Range. And through rainy mosquito-infested forests, and the hustling metropolis of Chicken, Alaska.
Finally, after another 30 straight hours of driving, Ken and the 6-foot 7-inch Bob pulled into Jasper, Alberta, having accumulated only 15 penalty points, which was more than good enough for an all-time record and a first-place finish.
To be perfectly honest, Ken and Bob did run into a little trouble along the way. A pothole just south of Destruction Bay. The crater damaged a tire, which wasn't nearly as terrible as what it did to the poor Saab behind them — it ate up their struts and suspension.
That was it for the entire trip. One slightly blemished wheel. Proving, once again, that while anyone can make a car for the human race, its Subaru who can make a car for an inhuman one.
Subaru. What to drive.™
