Additional information about the Jewish Mezuzah
:
The front side of the klaf contains two portions of scripture from the Bible, taken from the book of Deuteronomy (6:4-9, 11:13-21). The back of the parchment contains the Hebrew word Shadai which stands for "Shomer Delatot Yisrael" or Guard the Doors of Israel. When placing the rolled scroll inside the mezuzah case, It is Important to place the Written 'Shaday' in alignment with the letter 'Shin' on the case.
Translation of the Mezuzah Scriptures (Hebrew - English):
13
So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul
14
then I will send rain on your land in its season, the early rains and the late rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and oil.
15
I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.
16
Be careful lest you turn
away and worship other gods
and bow down to them.
17
Then the Lord's anger will blaze against you, and He will shut the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you.
18
Fix
these words
of mine upon your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
19
Teach them to your children, speaking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you rise up.
20
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates,
21
so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the Lord swore to give your
forefathers
, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
From Wikipedia: The Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue, are a set of commandments which the Bible describes as having been given to the Israelites by God at biblical Mount Sinai. The Ten Commandments are listed twice in the Hebrew Bible, first at Exodus 20:1–17, and then at Deuteronomy 5:4–21. Both versions state that God inscribed them on two stone tablets, which he gave to Moses. The commandments include instructions to worship only God, to honour parents, and to keep the sabbath; as well as prohibitions against idolatry, blasphemy, murder, adultery, theft, dishonesty, and coveting. Different religious groups follow different traditions for interpreting and numbering them.
In
biblical Hebrew
, the Ten Commandments are called
(
Asereth ha-D'bharîm
) and in
Rabbinical Hebrew (
Asereth ha-Dibroth
), both translatable as "the ten words", "the ten sayings" or "the ten matters".
The
Tyndale
and
Coverdale
English translations used "ten verses". The
Geneva Bible
appears to be the first to use "tenne commandements", which was followed by the
Bishops' Bible
and the
Authorized Version (the "King James" version)
as "ten commandments". Most major English versions follow the Authorized Version.
The stone tablets, as opposed to the commandments inscribed on them, are called
in
Hebrew
:
Luchot HaBrit
, meaning "the tablets of the
covenant
".
