Mummy Brown (Hue) - Handmade Oil Paint - 37ml

This hue is a carefully constructed imitation of the 19th century oil paint color known as "Mummy Brown". Mummy Brown was a very transparent brown color made from
grinding up Egyptian mummy remains and mixing it with oil for paint. This color was variable in its characteristics depending on the source but its hue sat between an umber and sienna hue. Great for flesh tones and shadows due to its dark and transparent characteristics.
There are a few "Mummy Brown" hues on the market but I have the advantage of working with the real thing. I have written a book on the handling properties and history of the oil paint color Mummy Brown. My imitation is slightly more saturated and warm than the genuine color, but it is very close in hue and transparency.
My imitation is composed of a careful blend of 4 pigments. 2 of these pigments have some connection to genuine Mummy Brown in a sense.
I use Marble Dust in this hue as it aids in transparency, texture, as well as de-saturation. Marble Dust is essentially calcium carbonate. Mummy Brown often contained human bone fragments, bones are essentially calcium carbonate.
Also, I add a very small amount of Asphaltum to my imitation color. Based on my research on Mummy Brown it is likely that some companies may have adulterated Mummy Brown with Asphaltum and there is a slight chance that some later period mummies may have included some bitumen/ asphaltum in the embalming process.
All of my colors are handmade without additives. No driers, fillers, brighteners etc. Just pigment and oil.
