    Description

Swedish MCM Stoneware: Andersson & Johansson, Höganäs, Sweden, Brown Bud Vase
    No other Swedish town
is as closely associated with ceramics as Höganäs. Kilns have been fired here for nearly two hundred years. Höganäsbolaget built its first kilns here in 1825. These kilns were fired with coal from local mines.
In 1909 two entrepreneurs left Höganäsbolaget and opened a new workshop north of Höganäs harbour.
Founded in 1909, Andersson & Johansson eventually became world renowned under the name Höganäs Keramik.
The pottery was established in 1909 by Johannes Olofsson (1899-1969) and Sigfrid Johanssen (d. 1944). When Olofsson left the following year, Karl Anderssson (d. 1962) took over, both having worked at nearby Höganäsbolaget as a potter and glazer, respectively.
Well-known designers at Andersson & Johansson have included John Andersson, Hertha Bengtson and Signe Persson-Melin.
Höganäskeramik was originally a completely different company, started in 1930 as Nyman & Nyman Höganäskeramik by the brothers Gustaf and Oskar Nyman in a newly built factory at Margreteberg in northern Höganäs. In 1956 the company was acquired by Andersson & Johansson, and in 1967 the company name Höganäs Ceramics began to be used.
This Art Deco style brown bud vase bears the incised stylized AJ
    Höganäs shopmark used by
Andersson & Johannson beginning in 1910 and continuing until 1957. In addition, it is incised "STENGODS", which is Swedish for stoneware, and it also carries a black hand-painted "Sweden." This bud vase measures almost 5.5 inches high, 4 inches at its widest point, and narrows to just 1 inch at the mouth. This piece, which carries a lovely soft chocolate brown glaze, is in excellent original condition, with no observed flaws. For more details on the condition of this bud vase, please see all the photos included in this listing.
