Swedish MCM Stoneware: Rohrstrand, Carl-Harry Stalhane, Studio Vase, OxbloodCarl-Harry
Stålhane (1920-1990) was a Swedish ceramicist, designer, sculptor and painter.
Stålhane studied faience painting at
Rörstrand's Porcelain Factory and
was employed after completing tests
as a faience painter at the factory in 1939, but in the mid-1940s he had the opportunity to try working at the potter's wheel, which resulted in
further training at Grünewald's
painting school 1944–1946 and for
the sculptor Ossip Zadkine at the
Académie Colarossi in Paris 1947–
1948. After the Paris era, he had to
work with design and he first created
a stoneware in Chinese classical style influenced by Gunnar Nylund's work. By the 1950s, he had developed his own style in chamotte stoneware, including vases and abstract sculptures with earth-tone glazes. By the age of 30, he had become a master of stoneware and took over as
Rörstrand's lead designer, succeeding Gunnar Nylund. In the early 1960s, he began working with heavier objects that we often modeled rather than turned, and square shapes became more common. At the same time that he was active at
Rörstrand,
he was appointed head teacher of ceramics and glass at the Gotheneberg School of Art and Design, where he served from 1963 to 1971. In 1973 he moved to his own business in Designhuset in
Lidköping, where he resumed his experiments with local clays and minerals and collaborated with other designers and throwers. His work received many awards over the years, including medals at the Milan Triennieal in 1948 (gold) and 1951 (honorary diploma).
This piece by
Stålhane for
Rörstrand carries a metallic red glaze, showing some signs of Chinese
influence.

Rörstrand three crown shopmark and
Stålhane's "CHS-e" signature. It is also marked "Atelje" to indicate that it is a studio (limited edition) piece.
