Description
Swedish MCM Stoneware: Rohrstrand, Olle Alberius, Large Vase, Bamboo Line, 1960sRörstrand was founded in the castle of Rörstrand in Stockholm, Sweden in 1726 under the direction of Johann Wolff, a German porcelain maker. This makes Rörstrand the second oldest brand of ceramics in Europe (after Meissen, 1709). By the turn of the 20th century, Rörstrand achieved international recognition with its Art Nouveau style under the artistic leadership of Alf Wallander (1862-1914). As the company grew, it moved from Stockholm to Gothenburg and finally to Lidköping. Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997) came to
Rörstrand as Artistic Director from Saxbo in Denmark in 1932. He was succeeded in 1958 as Artistic Director by Carl-Harry Stalhane (1920-1990), who first came to the company in 1938 as a decorator. From the 1930s into the 1970s,
Rörstrand attracted many talented artists. One of these was
Olle Alberius (1926–1993),
one of Sweden's leading glass and ceramic artists in the 20th century
.
After his art studies at ”Konstfack” in Stockholm, he worked for the companies Syco, Rörstrand, and Orrefors in the 1950s to 1990s.
Olle Alberius
designed many classics for the Swedish
Rörstrand
company between 1963 and 1971. Among his most popular and distinctive
Rörstrand lines in the 1960s was "Bamboo."
