Tyrian Purple (Hue) - Handmade Oil Paint - 37ml

Description

This tube of oil paint is a closely matching hue of what Tyrian Purple looks like when bound in linseed oil. The 2 pigments that I chose to use for this Tyrian Purple hue were historically used to create Purple/ violet hues during the Renaissance when there were no other single pigment purple/ violet colors available outside of Tyrian Purple, which was almost strictly used as a dye rather than a pigment for oil painting.
It is rumored that some artists dabbled with Tyrian Purple in oil painting, but the evidence for this is very limited. Dyes are typically better suited to staining things such as fabrics rather than binding with mediums like oils or acrylics because dyes dissolve in their binder, whereas pigments remain a separate entity from their binder. This affects the lightfastness of dyes, typically making them less lightfast.
I am using both genuine Indigo as well as genuine Alizarin Crimson to approximate a very close hue of Tyrian Purple. Historically Madder Lake was used in renaissance purple/ violet hues but in the interest of keeping this product cost-available, I have chosen to substitute Madder Lake with its synthetic counterpart Alizarin Crimson. Both are chemically very similar with the primary difference being that Alizarin Crimson is a more concentrated man-made version of Madder lake with fewer impurities causing for a more saturated color.
Other red and blue colors were used to approximate purple/ violet hues in renaissance painting but Indigo and Madder Lake pigments make for the best Tyrian Purple hue in terms both of the appearance of the color itself, as well as how the color handles.
All of my colors are handmade without additives. No driers, fillers, brighteners etc. Just pigment and oil.
