Tyrian Purple was a transparent, deep violet dye used during the renaissance primarily to dye fabrics for royalty. I have seen some evidence that it was also used as a pigment for painting, but the evidence is very limited. There was a time in history when it was actually illegal for common folks outside of the royal circle to adorn themselves in the color purple, this signified just how hard it was to obtain. To this day this color remains an extremely expensive dye to get ahold of and is only available from a small group of sources.
My imitation is a lightfast, affordable version. A close match without the baggage of the original.
