    Description

Listing is for one (1) candleholder by Einar Johansen from his "Blue Series."
Bold mid-century modern Danish design in the distinctive blue and brown of many Soholm Pottery items created by Johansen, the candleholder is 3” in diameter and 3 5/8" tall. The combination of matte and glossy glazes is particularly stunning. Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or scratches.
Soholm Pottery was founded in 1835 on the island of Bornholm, Denmark by Herman Sonne Wolffsen and Edward Christian Sonne, and closed shop in 1996. During the 1950s, 60, and 70s, Soholm employed young and talented designers who helped define the Danish Modern style in ceramics--Noomi Backhausen, Johannes Hedegaard, Henning Seidelin, Orla Muff, Einar Johansen, Maria Philippi, Arne Ranslet, and Haiko Nitzsche. Potter/designer Einar Johansen originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen but later opted to work in ceramics instead, working in his own studio from 1935 to 1958. In 1958 he began working at Soholm, staying there until 1968 designing a variety of objects including the "Blue Series" which has become a signature of his work. In the 1970s he worked for Knabstrup, another Danish pottery firm. Johansen designed many pieces with this same design of incised triangles and a blue/brown color palette--decorative dishes and bowls, lamp bases, ashtrays, wall sconces, and vases.
